The Uganda Project

Carriagehill Drive has, in partnership with the St Andrew’s Academy Uganda Project, paired up with the Good Hope Nursery in Kigumba, Uganda. St Andrew’s Academy has, over a number of years sent both pupils and staff to Uganda to assist in expanding the school community.

June 2015 Trip

The most recent Uganda Project trip took place in June 2015, and two of Heather’s daughters, Chloe and Katie, were part of this group. The group also took part in construction work – commencing work on a new school classroom – and also took part in teaching, and helping in the local health centre.

Carriagehill and Good Hope

For the last few years we have been able to help in their efforts, and the nursery has been inundated with donations of blankets and clothes, some of which have already been sent over to the nursery Kigumba! In addition, we have collected clothes, colouring pencils, papers and books, which have travelled over to Uganda with the Uganda Project.

The nursery children have been given this opportunity to learn about the lives of the children in Uganda, and have shown such generosity in their desire to help.

Heather’s eldest daughter, Hannah, travelled with a group which was able to assist in finishing a dormitory to house boarding pupils at Blessed Comboni Secondary School. During this visit, the group spent considerable time at Good Hope Primary School and Kindergarden, and the Head teacher of St Andrew’s Academy, Mr Quinn, was able to pass on the bag of donations gathered by Carriagehill Nursery.

After their arrival in Uganda, the numerous donations gathered by the group (including a vast number from Carriagehill) were organised and divided between several of the local schools. Our bag of donations (shown below) made it to its intended destination of Good Hope kindergarden, with some additions, where it was gratefully received by the Headmaster. Neighbouring schools also benefitted from some of our donations which were more suited to older children, such as books of a higher difficulty level.

The group were shocked by the differences between nursery in Uganda, and nursery here. Hannah spent time in class in Good Hope Nursery, during her time in Uganda. The room shown below is the ‘baby class’, for pupils aged 3-4. There was 91 pupils in this small classroom! Whilst the classroom is bare in comparison to that of nurseries here, the children at Good Hope were, as you would expect, as happy and cheerful as children here! However, the books, pencils and toys which many of our nursery parents generously donated will go a long way at Good Hope in further improving the learning experience of many children.
